out with logo, in with meme

Out With The Logo, In With The Meme

Logos arent you sick of them? Out of roughly 3000 marketing messages that reach every individual each day through multiple media channels, thousands of them are linked to a logo. It seems that logos have been lost in the deluge of messages. In a sense they are way too subtle to survive the marketing racket. Only the biggest Nike, Coke and Pepsi are still strong, to an extent because they are powerful but mainly because billions of dollars have been spent in promoting them to mean something. Professional marketers are taking a good hard look at the traditional logo and concluding that it may have lost its importance as a marketing tool. Even if companies come up with great logos, the cost of making them into instantly recognizable brand logos is prohibitively expensive. So on what visual hook should businesses hang their marketing efforts if not the logo? Well, logos are being replaced by memes, pronounced with a long e to rhyme with dream and team. Its English creator defined a meme as a basic unit of cultural transmission that passes from one mind to another and instantly conveys an entire idea. In other words it is a universally understood symbol with innate meaning. For example, everyone knows that a zigzag lightning bolt warns of dangerous electric current. You dont need advertising campaigns to tell you this. The silhouette of a few balloons directs you to the party. The open faced palm of a policemans hand tells you not to proceed beyond that point. And so on. So a meme does more than identify. It actually carries an instruction with it. The Chiquita Banana as well as Planters Mr. Peanut are on the way to being memes but they are not there entirely. But at least they tell us exactly the businesses of these companies. A meme is much more universal but at the same time must be appropriate for the business concerned. For example, banks are in the business of money. But would a dollar sign, or a sketch or print or picture or even a graphic image conveying this be appropriate? Yes, money is their product but the same is true for gambling operations. But would a dollar sign be correct for a gambling operation? Not really. A dice or a fruit machine would be more apt. Such a symbol is more linked to the benefits and zing connected with gambling. The memes mentioned above are ones that are already universally recognized. But why shouldnt brand new memes be just as recognizable? A good meme might show the tools of your trade. For instance a health club could show a set of weights in its meme. A hairdresser can use a comb and brush in a meme. The best memes suggest a complete scenario to the consumer. Take for instance a meme that could be used for an optician: a physicians eye chart with the lettering in decreasing size as the eye travels downwards. Instantly the entire process of having ones eyes tested is conveyed. There are a couple of fairly obvious steps to designing your meme. Ask yourself what the benefits that your products and services offer to customers. Are they unique to your business? What problems do you solve for customers? What needs and desires do you satisfy? Keep thinking about the customer, not about you. Then reduce your analysis to a single image, picture, symbol, icon or whatever visual device presents itself. You should be seen as different and better, but also the meme should make completely clear what your business is about. -- About the Author James Copper is a writer for http://www.marketinglinx.com where you can get help with business growth

branding

Things You Should Know About Branding

You know you've successfully branded your business when your customers recognize your name and are able to identify your products or company and separate you from all the other businesses offering similar services. Branding has one purpose, to earn the trust of your customers so that they buy only from you and refer your business to friends and family members looking for the same kind of products. Branding can be accomplished through several different methods that ensure your company is at the top search engine lists so consumers can find you among your competition on the Internet. An important aspect of developing a brand for your business involves creating a website that allows your customers to quickly recognize your name, what your products or services are and a catchy logo that represents your service and value. Your brand should be a direct representation of the products and services that you sell as well as the personal style of your business. There are many different marketing techniques that can create brand recognition and are relatively simple to implement. 1) Packaging. The packaging of your products should be unique and creative. You want your customers to be able to easily identify your packaging so they'll remember your company when they see it. For example, Tiffany & Co. has branded a little blue box that consumers automatically associate with the business. 2) Visual Communication. It's easier for people to relate visually, so create a clever logo that consumers will recognize. The logo should be displayed on your packaging, website, stationary, business cards, brochures, catalogs and advertisements and should symbolize your services and company. 3) Advertising Campaigns. A great way to boost sales and build brand recognition is to run an advertising campaign that puts your business in the eyes of consumers. Take each opportunity you have to expose your business and products to any forms of media, including: television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. Create a campaign that reaches out to several different outlets but contains the same common theme and message so that customers will begin to trust your name as a source for whatever products or services you're offering. Keeping strategies in place that always implement successful, positive branding for your company is the key to branding success. You should have clear, precise goals and know exactly what you want and what your company stands for. Before you begin branding your name, you must be absolutely positive of what service you'll be offering and what kind of attitude you want your business to be associated with. In order to build recognition, you need to be unique but steady in your services. Being strong, confident and constant in the way you deal with your customers will let them know what they should expect each time they do business with you. Branding is all about reaching out to your customers and making sure they keep coming back to your business for more. -- About the Author James Copper is a writer for http://www.marketinglinx.com where you can find out about branding your business

what do your colors say

What Do Your Colors Say?

They set the mood. They invoke a wide variety of different emotions or feelings. They have a huge impact on the way we perceive nearly everything in life.

I’m talking about colors. Look around you and you will see countless examples of colors altering your perception of various aspects of life. This can be as simple as associating green with springtime, which in turn becomes associated with growth and vitality.

There is a reason why people wear black at a funeral and a reason why red is considered a power color. If you go to a toy store, odds are the section for young boys will be blue while the one for young girls will be pink. You simply cannot escape the idea of associating certain colors with different elements of our culture. Same association can be applied in advertising and color printing.

In designing ads, especially those that you would want to use a lot of colors on, you need to understand the kind of impact that colors can have on people beforehand.

The more visual advertising is the more important this becomes. Take for instance advertising flyers. This form of advertising requires a strong color motif to get people interested in looking at it. Unlike a longer form of advertising, such as a catalog, a single glance needs to hook a person when they look at an advertising flyer, which is why you need to be sure you understand what colors would look best.

Are you trying to convey a sense of prestige? If so, you might use silver in your ad. Alternatively, maybe you want to have a sense of spirituality and dignity. In that case you should have purple be a prominent color.

Of course, even in longer advertisements you will need to be aware of what colors look best. When using a brochure printing company, the colors can be just as important as it is with a flyer. Having colors that sync up with what you are trying to say will help strengthen the message.

The strength of well-picked colors is the fact that it can augment your message. Sometimes you cannot come right out and say certain things about a product as easily. If you want to imply a feeling of warmth and vibrancy, well, this is not something you can easily say your product has. However, if you use a strong orange coloring surrounding the product, you can get this message across without actually using the words.

Not everything in an ad is going to be immediately considered on the conscious level. If you are not aware of the messages different colors send you might end up undermining your own message by using colors that counter your claims. Make sure when using a brochure printing company, or any other kind of advertising, that you are aware of exactly what your colors have to say. -- About the Author Kaye Z. how to market in the new web

How To Market In The New Web

Online marketing has metamorphosised within the last decade, it is barely recognizable to the early nineties models of promoting a website. Then it was about submitting your website to directories. A site like Yahoo directories would arrange these submissions into categories and topics. But as the number of websites increased, directories proved to be ill-equipped for the job of providing information to the net users. Then enter search technology, particularly Google. With search engines you would simply be able to cut through the chase and get to what you wanted using a search query. This changed the game of marketing from submitting websites to search engine optimization (SEO). Indeed SEO that includes the progression from keyword density of the late nineties all the way to theme density and the current Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) has been the bulk of internet marketing to date. And now with the strong wind of Web 2.0 blowing, marketing online is facing an imminent shift. However unlike preceding marketing methods that were sort of phased out with new technologies, Web 2.0 seems to be an addition rather than a take over. To give you an idea of how much market Web 2.0 is controlling, MySpace.com one of the major Web 2.0 presences receives twice as many visitors as Google.com in a day. MySpace has over 100 million members that login frequently. Keep in mind that Google controls as much as 40% of the search market. Then consider that there is Bibo.com, Hi5, Del..Icio.Us, Digg.com and hundreds more. As a business this is a market you cannot afford to ignore. There are some proven techniques and strategies that are well able to target this well profiled market. Incorporating them into your website makes you Web 2.0 ready. They include; RSS : This stands for Really Simple Syndication. This technology allows a user to be notified of changes in a website of interest immediately. All they need to do is subscribe to the websites RSS feed. The user need not keep manually checking your website for updates. Tagging : This is particularly a phenomena of book-marking sites like Del.Icio.Us. Tagging involves assigning your web pages with one word that best describes the content in each page. This allows a user of a book-marking site to easily find content that other users have tagged with a particular tag of interest. News Submissions : This technique is great for creating wide spread instant buzz for your site. News submission sites like Digg.com allow its users to suggest interesting content. The content is then availed to other users who vote on it. If it becomes popular that site can attract hundreds of thousands of visitors in a matter of days. -- About the Author The author recommends an All-in-One Small Online Business solution by SiteSell called Site Build It. top three reasons most maketers fails

The Top 3 Reasons Most Marketers Fail

There must be some reason why some internet marketers seem to be highly successful while others struggle to make their first sale. Said another way, what is the secret that these top producers know and how can I learn it? Actually, the answer may be simpler than you think. In my opinion, there are three top reasons why most marketers fail. Learn to avoid these traps and you will be on your way to becoming one of those top producers you read about. I call it ESP. E ELIMINATE distractions and become organized. Having a successful internet business is a job and takes work. If you are dreaming of having the money rolling in without having to do much of anything, it just simply is not going to happen. However, if you are smart about how you structure your business, once you have done something, then you will not have to do it again. The use of auto responders is a great example. Most of us try and do too much when we are first getting started. We find ourselves on the email list of every marketer, download every free report, check out every new Make $10,000 this month offer, and look at so many options we never seem to get anything done. We spend so much time clicking on every email, answering every twitter, going to facebook, etc. throughout the day that we end up wondering where the day went and why nothing got done. Decide what the important things are that you need to do, develop a schedule, and then do them! S SIMPLIFY your life and focus on what is important. When you get right down to it, there are only three things you need to do in order to be successful with your internet marketing and have it become a career for you. Once you recognize that this is the key, eliminate all the extraneous things you are doing and spend your time concentrating on these three: 1. Develop an offer. You have to have something you are selling or promoting. It can be your own product or a product you are promoting as an affiliate. Many affiliates develop a great income without ever having their own product to promote. Other marketers develop their own product and sell it through a membership site, clickbank, or through other affiliates. Decide on your product and then move to step 2. 2. Develop a list to promote to. You have probably heard that the money is in the list. This is most definitely true. If you do not have a list of people to send your offers to, then you do not have anyone to buy your product. So many people work hard to develop a website and get it online, and then they cannot understand why the sales are not pouring in. The answer is simple as they have no list to promote to. If you are going to be successful in internet marketing, you must develop a list. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. 3. Promote to your list. Once you have a list, you have to continually promote your product or offer to your list. At some point, you will want to become an affiliate for others and seek out affiliates to help promote your product. Every wonder why every time a guru gets ready to launch a new product, you get tons of emails from different marketers promoting that very product. They are all in it together and are working together to help each other make money. In your marketing efforts, you want to be able to get to that point with your product promotion P PARALYSIS by Analysis. Perhaps the biggest mistake most marketers succumb to is paralysis by analysis. They spend so much time analyzing every detail of what they are doing and trying so hard to get everything just right that they end up never getting anything accomplished. Whether it is a website, a blog, a marketing newsletter, a membership site, or any type of informational product, the key is to not wait until every detail is absolutely perfect. Do what you need to do in order to get started, get it online and making money, and refine it as you go. Learn the pitfalls of ESP and how to avoid them and you will be on your way to success as an internet marketer. Make a plan for what you want to do and accomplish, identify the resources to help you achieve your goals, and then just go do it! -- About the Author Jim Stott is the publisher of the Magical Marketing Enews and Updates newsletter full of information for internet marketers. Fishing for Leads - The 5 Steps

Fishing for Leads - The 5 Steps

Fishing for Leads - The 5 Steps

By: Peter Lawless
The first thing that I noticed when I got onto the small boat at the harbour in Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, was the cleanliness and order of the boat. The skipper in charge had all of the rods, upright, with their lines neatly tucked away, in holders. The holders were made out of piping, about 30cm long, which had been welded to the side of the boat.

A simple, inexpensive aid had made me sit up and pay attention. This skipper thought about his customers, and this device left a strong impression. We then got a very short lecture on safety, checked we had our life jackets on, and off we went. About 12 of us!

Finding your target market
About 12 minutes later, the skipper stopped the boat, and told us we should find some mackerel here. He explained that the lures on the hooks looked just like what mackerel wanted to eat. It certainly was not something I would have fancied!

He explained that through his experience and the help of a little sonar gadget on his boat, that he knew there was a shoal of fish below. We all slung our rods over the side and dropped our lines.

Reeling in the sale
Now I don't know about you, but this was totally new to me. I wound up the line frantically, as soon as I felt a tug, and hey presto, there were three fish dangling off the hooks. I started flailing about, one jumped off before I even got it in over the side, and when I was trying to reel it in the final bit I lost an other one. The one that I got in, I lost down the gutter when I finally got it off the hook.

The skipper explained to me, that once a fish took the bait, I should give a quick tug on the rod, to make sure it was firmly hooked. I should then take my time, to reel it in. Secure the rod in the holder, with the fish hanging over the bucket and deal with them one by one - I did, and I ended up with 20 fish, which delighted me, as I had set a target of 10, since my friend had caught 9 on his first time

So what are the lessons for marketing - if you are still with me, and have not already got most of them, here they are in business speak;
1. Set goals and targets that are realistic, and based on some valid foundation or research.
2. Have simple procedures set up, to make it easy to operate and for your customers to conduct business with you.
3. Speak in your prospects language, about what they want - it's a bit like the fish bait, unlikely that strawberries and cream will catch many mackerel!
4. Once you know what your prospects like, find out where they are, do some research and target them accordingly - as in our example, not much point in putting down shark bait in a shoal of mackerel.
5. Once you get your customers attention, or have a lead, qualify it, and ensure you follow up at all time to close the sale. Again the use of a good sales process is essential here.

The bottom line, if you know what problems or desires your customers have, and you can solve or fulfill these, while providing value for money, you will always be a winner.

And if you don't know the answer to that question, go ask the people who have already bought from you - they do!

About Logos

About Logos

By: Vukan Karadzic

What makes one logo better than another?

Simplicity.

A good logo works in the simplest form. It is a memorable representation of your brand and inspires confidence in your customers. It should be fresh and original -- without visual cliches or amateur effects. A logo is well-designed when it looks as good on a business card as it does on a web page or a billboard. To be functional, a good logo must reduce well to simple black & white or grayscale for use on faxes or in newspaper ads. The best logos are elegantly simple.

Why do you need a logo?
In a way, a logo is a visual shortcut to who you are. Your logo will establish your corporate identity and credibility. It builds loyalty among your clients and employees. You invest in your brand image every time your logo is displayed on a Web page, on a sign, or in an advertisement.

A professionally designed logo enables you to be immediately recognizable and must be unique, memorable and simple. Such a logo will become one of your most valuable corporate assets over time.

How does your current logo stack up?
Run down this logo quick test:

  • Does the logo have immediate impact?
  • Is it good to look at?
  • Is it distinctive?
  • Does it create or evoke a positive image?
  • Does it accurately represent the organization or business?
  • Is it straightforward?
  • Is it comprehensible?
  • Is it memorable?
  • Is it flexible?
  • Does it copy well?
  • Will it hold up to both large and small scale use?
  • Will it wear well over time?
  • Will you be proud to use it?
